The Victorian Government will begin establishing a site office on Wallara Waters Boulevard from Monday 6 October ahead of major works to upgrade the Watson Street Interchange, better known locally as the Wallan ramps.
The project will add an outbound exit ramp and an inbound entry ramp on the Hume Freeway at Watson Street. New traffic signals and walking and cycling connections will also form part of the works.
The upgrade is expected to reduce congestion, improve safety and travel times, and support Wallan's continued growth.
According to the Victorian Government's project timeline, planning and investigations will continue through 2025, with early works beginning later this year. Major construction is scheduled to start in 2026 and continue until 2028.
This progress follows years of sustained advocacy from Mitchell Shire Council to both State and Federal Governments. Council has consistently called for the project to be prioritised to ease growing traffic pressures, improve freight connectivity, and better connect Wallan East residents.
Council has also highlighted the importance of this upgrade in light of the significant population growth forecast for the region, with Wallan's population expected to grow to more than 50,000 in the coming decades.
