Skybridge to connect airport to new METRONET station

  • Seamless link between Perth Airport and Airport Central Station
  • Tunnel boring machines now clear of main runway at Perth Airport
  • Construction is set to begin on a Skybridge connecting Perth Airport's Terminal 1 to Airport Central Station.

The elevated walkway will create a seamless connection for passengers arriving or leaving the airport by rail. The enclosed walkway stretches 280 metres and includes travelators and lifts.

The project will be delivered by Georgiou Group, working for Perth Airport, using funding provided as part of the Forrestfield-Airport Link project. Construction will be completed for when the first trains run on the Forrestfield Line.

Construction of the station at Airport Central is advanced with columns to support the different levels within the station box almost finished, with the final one now under construction.

Construction of the elevator pit has commenced, as has construction of the elevated walkway connection which will be part of the main entrance to the station.

Perth Airport has released images showing how the Skybridge will link the station to the airport. The images can be viewed here.

The Skybridge provides an elevated sheltered walkway across the main terminal car park, providing direct access to the T1 forecourt as well as access to T2. It is designed to provide clear orientation and wayfinding with views across the terminal precinct.

Perth Airport is undergoing a major redevelopment, which includes relocating and consolidating the domestic and international terminals at T1 and T2 - where Airport Central Station is located.

Meanwhile, the tunnel boring machines for the Forrestfield-Airport Link are now both clear of the main runway at Perth Airport - a major milestone for the tunnel construction.

As noted by Transport Minister Rita Saffioti:

"This Skybridge is a major step in ensuring that we make taking public transport to the airport as easy and user-friendly as possible for passengers, and assist in creating a world-class visitor experience for all.

"At the cost of a standard two zone fare to the CBD, we see travelling to and from the airport by train as a desirable and convenient option.

"I would like to thank Perth Airport for working with the Government to ensure this project can be achieved for locals and visitors to Western Australia."

As noted by Perth Airport CEO, Kevin Brown:

"The development of Airport Central Station and its link to the terminals via the Skybridge will provide a seamless passenger experience to our terminals, and will link the central airport precinct with the new rail line.

"The Skybridge will connect the station with current and future terminal infrastructure, and we will be looking at opportunities to create a 'sense of place' in the walkway which will offer visitors a great welcome to Western Australia.

"Perth Airport's focus is on providing an efficient and modern airport that will provide the level of service and facilities that Western Australia deserves to have as Australia's Western Hub, well into the future.

"The Forrestfield-Airport Link and the recent upgrades to major road networks aligned with Gateway WA have significantly enhanced the connectivity to and from Perth Airport."
