Cairns Libraries is proud to announce an exciting new chapter for Smithfield Library, with a major renovation project set to begin this September.
The upgrade will transform the existing space into a modern, welcoming, and accessible hub for learning, creativity, and community connection.
With a strong focus on flexibility and functionality, the renovations will deliver enhanced facilities, new technology, and dedicated areas for programs that support digital literacy and lifelong learning.
"Libraries are more than just books - they're places of connection, imagination and growth," said Mayor Amy Eden. "This renovation is about creating a dynamic space that reflects the evolving needs of our community and sets the standard for what a modern library can offer."
Councillor Rhonda Coglan said, "These improvements will ensure the library can continue to service the community. We appreciate everyone's patience as we work towards a stronger future for our libraries, and encourage residents to explore other Libraries in the region."
Temporary Closure Details
Smithfield Library will close its doors from 1 September 2025, with a planned reopening 1 May 2026. During this time:

- A 24/7 external book return bin will be installed at a nearby location, which will be announced closure to the temporary closure to allow for easy item returns.
