Snake safety: Casey

With summer quickly approaching and the weather warming up, residents are reminded to keep a lookout for snakes while out and about enjoying Council's parks and open spaces.

As snakes become more active in the warm weather and venture out to find warm dry open areas to sunbake, residents may be more likely to come across them.

Snakes feed on small animals such as frogs, lizards, mice and rats and are protected under the Wildlife Act (1975), as they are an important part of the natural environment.

There are steps you can take to discourage snakes from moving onto your property, such as:

  • Maintaining lawns
  • Removing rubbish and piles of building materials or rocks where snakes may seek shelter
  • Discourage mice and rats from living around your property as these will attract snakes.

When visiting areas where snakes may be present, please remember to:

  • Wear closed in shoes and long pants
  • Stay on paths and out of long grass
  • Keep dogs on leads
  • Keep your mobile phone on you

If you see a snake in a reserve or public area:

  • Keep calm and slowly remove yourself and any pets from the area
  • Do NOT approach the snake or try to catch or harm it
  • Notify other park users close by
  • Contact Council's customer service on 9705 5200 if the snake is in or around a council building, playgrounds or BBQ areas.
