A historic achievement for space startup Isar Aerospace: On just its second launch attempt, the Technical University of Munich (TUM) spin-off successfully placed its Spectrum launch vehicle and payload into Earth orbit. The milestone marks a major step toward establishing independent European access to space for the company based in Ottobrunn near Munich.

Founded in 2018 by three TUM graduates, Isar Aerospace has already achieved unicorn status , with a company valuation exceeding one billion U.S. dollars. TUM President Thomas F. Hofmann congratulated the team on the successful mission: "What a phenomenal success! TUM shares in the team's joy and is proud of you! Isar Aerospace is a wonderful example of what dedicated and highly trained talent, along with the unique innovation ecosystem surrounding TUM and UnternehmerTUM, can achieve."

Isar Aerospace has its roots in the student research group WARR , where the three founders-Daniel Metzler, Josef Fleischmann, and Markus Brandl-worked on rocket engines during their studies at TUM. After the company was founded in 2018, the first prototypes of components were developed in UnternehmerTUM's MakerSpace . The company also received support from the XPRENEURS incubator , as well as investments that enabled its growth in recent years. Today, Isar Aerospace is headquartered in Ottobrunn, in the immediate vicinity of the Department of Aerospace and Geodesy at the TUM School of Engineering and Design .

The Isar Aerospace launch vehicle lifted off from the Andøya Spaceport in Norway. On board were five CubeSat mini satellites and a scientific experiment from a private European company. The company's business model focuses on launching small and medium-sized satellites designed to meet the growing demands of applications such as communications networks, digital services, and autonomous mobility. These applications require large numbers of small satellites operating in low Earth orbit.
