Solar Power Delivers Resilience For Westpac NZ Branches

Westpac NZ has recently completed installation of solar panels and electrical storage systems in four branches in Gisborne, Napier, Rotorua and Papatoetoe.

Colin Trenwith, Westpac NZ Senior Manager National Facilities & Operations, says the updates are part of the bank's work to future-proof its network.

"Using solar energy means these branches now have lower carbon emissions, but improving resilience in the event of power outages is also a key benefit," Mr Trenwith says.

When Cyclone Gabrielle hit New Zealand in February 2023, most areas of Hawke's Bay and Gisborne experienced intermittent power outages, with phone and internet connection also out for several days.

Banking systems and ATMs were down for all banks throughout both regions, meaning getting cash or using cards to buy food and other essential items was a struggle for many people.

To get power back to its branches and ATMs, Westpac trucked generators into both regions.

"Installing solar panels and power storage units in our branches means in the event of any future power outage, those branches could remain operational and support their communities with basic banking services," Mr Trenwith says.

The electrical storage batteries contain enough power to be able to run Westpac's ATMs, automatic doors, teller area equipment and selected other systems for several days without sunshine and ongoing if solar is available.

Nicky McCleland, Napier Bank Manager, says she and her team are delighted with the branch refurbishment.

"The whole space is really inviting for customers now and having solar is great. It will help to make sure we're there for the community when we need to be. That's the biggest thing."

Mr Trenwith says Westpac plans to continue with solar panel installation throughout the branch network where possible.
