We're pleased to share an update on the Somerville to Baxter section of the Peninsula Trail.
What's open now
The northern section of the trail, between Baxter-Tooradin Road and Golf Links Road (approximately 1.2km), is complete and open. This section has reached practical completion and is ready to use.
Acting Mayor Councillor Paul Pingiaro said, "this trail is all about connecting our communities and giving people more safe, scenic ways to get around."
What's not open yet
The full length of the trail cannot open until a safe crossing is delivered at Frankston-Flinders Road near Hawkins Road. Construction works on site have paused while we complete the detailed design for this crossing.
The crossing near the rail line requires a solution that's both safe and practical. After assessing options, we are progressing the detailed design of a culvert underpass. Because Frankston-Flinders Road is a state-managed road, we are working closely with the Department of Transport and Planning to finalise the design.
Beek Beek Ward Councillor Kate Roper said safety was the priority.
"This is an important link for our community, and we need to make sure the crossing is safe and works well into the future," Cr Roper said.
"We expect the underpass design to be finalised within the next couple of months. Once that's complete, construction can move ahead."
What's happening now
- The boardwalk section is nearing completion and is expected to be finished within the next three weeks.
- Minor finishing works are continuing across other sections of the project.
- Detailed design for the underpass is underway.
When will the full trail open?
Subject to final design approvals and construction timeframes, we're aiming to complete the underpass and open the full length of the trail mid-year.
