City of Mount Gambier has unveiled a bold advocacy plan, outlining its vision to develop its reputation as South Australia's world-class regional capital and a driving force for economic, social and cultural transformation across the Limestone Coast.
The plan highlights Mount Gambier's $9 billion regional economy, innovative industries, skilled workforce and strategic cross-border location, positioning the city as a key growth engine for the state.
Mayor Lynette Martin said the plan sets out a clear roadmap for partnership and investment.
"Mount Gambier is at the centre of a regional market that straddles two states. With scale, skills and strategic location, we are ready to drive South Australia's growth from the Limestone Coast," Mayor Martin said.
"Backing Mount Gambier backs South Australia. Investment here multiplies benefits across the Limestone Coast and the state."
Council is calling for strong partnerships with the State Government and key stakeholders to deliver transformative projects that will accelerate growth and community wellbeing.
Priority funding requests include:
- $660,000 for CBD activation.
- $4.5 million for community spaces.
- $250,000 towards cultural heritage management planning.
- $400,000 for event infrastructure and promotion.
"This plan calls for co-investment to accelerate projects that connect our CBD, strengthen community hubs and showcase our city's culture and events," Mayor Martin said.
"Our priority is delivery. With state partnership, these projects can move from concept to construction."
The plan builds on significant progress already made, including the opening of the Wulanda Recreation and Convention Centre and community facilities such as the Rail Trail.
"We've laid the groundwork. The next step is to knit these assets into a more active, welcoming inner-city precinct," Mayor Martin said.
Key priorities include:
- Investment in community capability through events, sport, recreation and the arts.
- Advancing master plans for the CBD, Railway Lands play space, Vansittart Park, Blue Lake Sports Park and Umpherston Sinkhole/Balumbul.
- Activation of the Crater Lakes precinct in partnership with First Nations groups.
- Strengthening local event capability and supporting major events to boost regional activation.
- Addressing infrastructure and essential service needs to support population growth and economic potential.
- Advocating for improved healthcare access and outcomes for the region.
"Mount Gambier is ready to partner, grow and deliver for South Australians and for the future of our state. Together, we want to build the next chapter for South Australia, right here in Mount Gambier," Mayor Martin said.
