South Cools, NSW Heats Up in National Weather Forecast

And watch through the morning hours, how we see this ribbon of rain develop from Victoria through South Australia and across to the south of Western Australia. So we certainly see some wet conditions, some cool, cloudy grey conditions in those areas. Most of the rest of the country relatively clear, really warm through New South Wales and southern Queensland. A few showers about the Queensland coast and southerly winds really knocked the temperatures down in Tasmania.

For Queensland, onshore showers is the name of the game that could bring a little bit of rainfall to all eastern districts from the south-east coast up to north of Cairns. Most people will just get single digit rainfall totals, or perhaps you could even get lucky and avoid the showers all day, ending up with nothing in your local rain gauge. But many will get a bit of rain across that coastline. Inland, it is going to be very similar to recent days. Warm, clear, sunny with some high fire danger.

Temperatures well above average throughout New South Wales. Across the east coast, Sydney tracking for a sunny 29 °C day. Wollongong and Newcastle both 31 °C, and Maitland up to 33 °C. Inland, those temperatures are also in the 30s. As the day comes to a close, notice how some rain builds in the south-east, and we will expect to see a southerly change move up this coastline in the afternoon and evening. So not only will it get wet down here, but the temperature will also drop quite sharply towards the end of the day through the south-east, into the Illawarra, and perhaps that wet cool change could arrive in Sydney about midnight. Canberra would also finish the day with a shower after their warm 27 °C.

A grey day across Victoria tomorrow. Southerly winds as well, so those temperatures are really coming down compared to recent days. A high of just 16 °C in Melbourne for the AFL Grand Final, with some patchy rain expected as well. The rainfall across the state tomorrow not expected to be heavy anywhere, and it might come and go throughout the course of the day, so there will be some long dry breaks around but likely to see some rain as well. Grey skies do persist overhead almost everywhere. Except for the north-west plains around Mildura, another warm day without any rainfall in a high of 28 °C.

Southerly winds have set up across Tasmania, temperatures really plunging here feeling more like July than September, a high of just 13 °C in Hobart, 12 °C and Huonville and 12 °C in Queenstown. A touch warmer across the north with Launceston reaching 15 °C. Cloudy skies through much of the day with a little bit of morning and early afternoon rainfall but drying up into Saturday afternoon.

We'll see rain develop in the morning for much of southern South Australia, including the Eyre Peninsula, the Yorke Peninsula, Adelaide and the Mount Lofty Ranges and then through parts of the south-east around Keith and Bordertown as well. Cloudy skies in those areas with mild temperatures. Mount Gambier, actually a little too far south, avoids most of the rain. Might see a shower or two, a high of 15 °C there. In and north of Whyalla, it is expected to be another mostly clear, sunny and warm day.

The weather system out west just keeps on pumping. Really unusual pattern here, but more showers and storms. Over Western Australia's outback and across almost the entire south coast. So very wet again between Eucla and Albany. Temperatures well below the average for the time of year in those southern and inland areas as well, underneath thick cloud. Throughout Saturday, a little band of rain will push across the Wheatbelt and the South West Land Division, including Perth, so we'll see small amounts of rainfall in those areas, perhaps 5 mm to 10 mm. Further north from Geraldton, up and around the Pilbara coastline, fine and sunny.

And across Australia's north, the wet season is around the corner, officially beginning next week once we move into October, but no signs of significant rainfall on the forecast at the moment. Certainly some showers across the Gulf Coast and the slight chance of a shower across other parts of the Top End close, including in and around the Darwin area. Aside from Nhulunbuy, temperatures, are in the 30s across the board, as high as 37 °C in some areas.

And since we're rolling into the weekend, lets quickly take a peek at Sunday. Notice how Sunday's much cooler in Sydney and Canberra with those southerly winds. There'll be some showers in both of those capitals as well. Should be dry but still relatively cool around Melbourne and Hobart. Temperatures in the mid teens there. Adelaide at 20 °C, Brisbane still expecting a pretty nice day there. A sunny 28 °C. Hot through the interior and in the north. And Perth, a bit of a mixed bag, some gusty winds, some passing showers but hopefully a few glimpses of sunshine as well.
