Three suburban roads in Corangamite Shire have new lower speed limits to improve community safety.

Manager Assets Planning John Kelly said council was responsible for assessing speed limits on local roads but the Department of Transport (DOT) had to review all proposals.

"There is a procedure to go through including traffic counts, explaining why it is needed, and community input," Mr Kelly said.

"Due to community concerns about speed and truck traffic, we had been approached to drop the speed limit on Bowen Street in Camperdown from 60 kmh to 50 kmh.

"In Apil 2024 built new outstands for pedestrian safety on Bowen Street at the intersections with McAlpine Court/Dawson Street, Lakeview Avenue/Dimora Avenue, and Park Lane/Fenton Street.

"They also installed and traffic calming and the new speed limit now complements those works."

Mr Kelly said the department had also approved reduction of the speed limit on Baynes Street, Terang, from 60 kmh to 50 kmh.

"Residents had asked to reduce the speed limit because a lot of trucks.

"We anticipate the $971,000 widening of 2 km of Noogee Road scheduled for the 2025-2026 construction season might take some of that traffic out of town."

Park Lane in Camperdown also had its speed limit reduced due to changes to the road environment.

"With the new concrete path beside Park Lane there is more pedestrian and cycling traffic," Mr Kelly said.

"It was previously 80 kmh and we got approval to drop it to 60 kmh.

"The path was fully funded by Transport Accident Commission Safe Local Roads and Streets Program and the Department of Transport."
