Spending up, unemployment down in Cairns

A snapshot of economic data reveals that consumer spending in the Cairns local government area increased sharply from $321 million in November 2021 to $417 million in December 2021.

Notably, this was an increase from July 2020 ($411 million), when domestic tourism levels were reaching pre-pandemic levels preceding COVID lockdowns.

A report tabled in Council today also revealed that the unemployment rate for the Cairns LGA fell from 5.5% in the June quarter, to 4.9% in the September quarter 2021.

The unemployment rate for the broader Cairns SA4 region was at 5% in December 2021, compared with 6.1% twelve months ago.
