Spud-tacular Finds Unveiled at Agfest 2025

At Agfest 2025 , one of the world's most beloved crops - potatoes - will be in the spotlight as staff, researchers, students and alumni from the University bring innovation and education together in an exciting showcase.

From 1-3 May, visitors to the University Pavilion will have the unique opportunity to engage in a range of potato-themed activities and displays, highlighting the journey of Tassie potatoes from paddock to plate and how agricultural science supports this process.

Leanne Arnott, Director Tasmania Engagement at the University, says the potato-focused exhibits are designed to educate the public on the role research plays in food production.

"Activities like the potato density test, where you can discover which potato variety makes the best hot chip, will give everyone a deeper appreciation for the science behind the food we eat," Ms Arnott said.

Other highlights include a display of potato varieties, potato grow bags, and insights into potato disease and food processing innovation. Visitors can also test their knowledge of different potato varieties and their uses with the "Know Your Potato?" challenge.

It's not just our favourite Dutch Creams, Pink Eyes and Kennebecs on show at Agfest this year; visitors will also have the chance to learn about other important research and innovations underway across agriculture and health.

"Agfest is a chance for us to share how we're helping to tackle global challenges while also celebrating the incredible potential of our local communities. It's about connecting, learning, and being inspired," said Ms Arnott.

Find out how drones are revolutionising environmental management of many important crops across Tasmania, learn about the science of sustainability through gardening and sustainable housing design, and discover the secrets to growing a prize-winning black radish with the Tasmanian Institute of Agriculture team.

The popular 'Let it Grow' veggie growing competition and 'Soil Your Undies', a soil health competition, will also take place on Thursday 1 May with an official weigh-in ceremony at 11:30am.

A visit to Healthstop is also worthwhile, for a free blood pressure check and tips on how to avoid the risks of dementia while the kids make their own hand cream and test their sporting skills - there's something for everyone to enjoy.
