Settlement Services International (SSI) congratulates the Albanese government on their re-election acknowledging the Australian people's clear choice to back a future grounded in fairness, inclusion, and respect for human rights.
The rejection of divisive politics and fearmongering — including proposals to slash the humanitarian intake, reduce foreign aid and demonise migrants and refugees — sends a powerful message: Australians want a government that brings communities together, not drives them apart.
Now, with a renewed mandate, the Albanese Government has a unique opportunity to advance reforms that build a more cohesive, prosperous and equitable nation. SSI urges the Albanese Government to act decisively on critical policy fronts:
Increasing safe and supported migration pathways to further develop and enhance Australia's humanitarian framework and support the growing number of people around the world displaced by conflict and persecution
Unlocking the potential of migrants and refugees by reforming the overseas skills and qualification recognition system and ensuring inclusive pathways to employment
Supporting social cohesion through addressing the recommendations of the Multicultural Framework Review and continuation of vital funding for multicultural organisations to deliver tailored programs and specialised services
Improve access to early childhood education for multicultural children and families through a mix of targeted and place-based interventions
Progressing significant disability reforms to ensure that people with disabilities from multicultural backgrounds can access the NDIS and other mainstream services including health and foundational supports.
SSI CEO Violet Roumeliotis said: "The Australian community has sent a clear message: Australia is stronger when we choose fairness over fear. We now call on the Government to match that public spirit with bold action — not just promising steps, but systemic change that unlocks the potential of every Australian."
SSI applauds recent federal investments in social cohesion, employment pathways and multicultural support, as outlined in the 2025-26 Federal Budget. However, the next term must go further — ensuring that inclusion is not peripheral, but central, to Australia's economic and social strategy.
"This is not just about fairness," Ms Roumeliotis said. "It's about shaping an Australia where every person, no matter their background, has the support and opportunity to participate fully — and where our policies reflect the values we stand for as a nation."
