Statement by Minister Joly on North Korea's continued provocations

Global Affairs Canada

The Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today issued the following statement in response to North Korea's ongoing missile launches and military activity:

"Canada strongly condemns North Korea's continued ballistic missile launches, including the latest launch of a suspected intercontinental ballistic missile, and its threatening military activity in close proximity to the demilitarized zone. These egregious actions, which put civilian lives at risk, further destabilize regional and international security and do not serve peace.

"North Korea must respect its international obligations, including UN Security Council resolutions, and work toward a peaceful resolution through diplomacy and dialogue.

"Canada is committed to supporting efforts to help achieve a world free of nuclear weapons. We will continue advocating for North Korea's denuclearization and supporting international efforts to respond to North Korea's illegal and aggressive actions.

"We stand firmly with the people of Japan and of South Korea and support their efforts to build a more stable, peaceful and prosperous Indo-Pacific region."
