The safety and wellbeing of residents living near the Kealba Landfill site is a priority for the Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA), as is keeping them informed about the clean-up of the landfill site. Our officers continue to be in contact with locals to understand their concerns and answer their questions.
We acknowledge the recent increase in odour from the site, which is due to clean-up works underway in sections of the landfill that contain older waste. However, there is no evidence of illegal activities or toxic chemicals buried at the landfill.
Air monitoring by the EPA and the landfill operator, Barro Group Pty Ltd, has found no issues of concern with respect to human health to date. This monitoring will continue until the clean-up of the site is completed.
Technical specialists are onsite, continuing to oversee the remediation works.
EPA understands the concerns of the Kealba community and we are working hard to ensure the operators clean-up the Kealba Landfill site as quickly as possible, and that it is also done safely.
Weekly compliance inspections continue to show the operator is working within its licence requirements and EPA is satisfied with their monitoring process.
Currently, the landfill does not accept any new waste. It has previously received solid inert waste and shredded tyres. EPA has issued new notices to the landfill operator that will ensure the hotspots continue to be remediated as quickly and safely as possible, including air quality monitoring and community engagement.
EPA takes pollution reports from this site seriously and ensures local residents have access to all information – including videos of remediation work - through our website and social media channels, emails and contact with our officers.
EPA asks members of the community to report any possible pollution to 1300 EPA VIC.
