At 1.30pm today after a National Review of COVID-19 infection rates, Prime Minister, Scott Morrison announced that restrictions will be lifted on some non-essential surgeries and that fertility clinics can return to operation. On 27 April 2020, Genea operations will return and patients wishing to start a stimulated IVF cycle, frozen embryo transfer cycle and egg and sperm freezing - can do so. Genea is currently reviewing individual clinic operations and may look to centralise some services.
Genea Medical Director, Associate Professor Mark Bowman said, "it's been a devasting few weeks for those who wanted to commence treatment but as always, Genea adheres and respects the advice and requirements of the government". He adds, "it is wonderful news we can open our doors again and support those longing for a family, many of our patients don't have time to waste."
Genea clinics returning to operation will continue to require strict social distancing measures to reduce the risk of infection amongst patients and staff. Dr Bowman says the safety of patients and staff is always paramount and responsible delivery of healthcare is core to Genea's operating model, "over the past month our counsellors, doctors, nurses and scientists have all worked hard to support patients unable to access services, we will continue to do all we can to ensure patients feel safe and supported in our environment."
