I have made the extraordinarily difficult decision to resign as the Member for Nightcliff due to ongoing health challenges, effective immediately. I cannot stress enough how difficult this decision has been to come to.
It has been an enormous privilege to serve the people of Nightcliff and to be the first Greens member elected to the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly. This has been something beyond my wildest dreams, and I have shouldered the immense responsibility of the role with pride every day.
I am someone that likes to commit 150% to everything I do. This community deserves to continue to have someone who can give them that, and unfortunately I cannot anymore. As anyone in Parliament will tell you, the responsibility of the role bears a significant toll on us all, particularly for those of us with young children.
For too long, the people of Nightcliff's views on issues like climate change, integrity, and justice were ignored - overpowered by corporate interests, powerful donors, and the right-wing media. I have felt immensely proud to bring your voices into Parliament to be heard and demonstrate to the major two parties that there is a large community here that want and deserve better than the status quo.
Nightcliff is uniquely progressive, engaged, and full of hope, and must be represented by someone who truly listens and is led by this community. That is something I have strived to do every day as the Member for Nightcliff, and I hope that my successor honours the values and spirit of this wonderful place.
I want to thank my staff and volunteers for their incredibly hard work in the electorate office, in the community, and in the parliament. Crossbenchers in the NT get just 1.4 full time electorate staff and no parliamentary staff, so we rely on the hard work and good will of ordinary community members to meet the needs and expectations of our constituents.
To the dozens of volunteers who delivered newsletters, served up community dinners, answered phones at the front desk, or picked up rubbish at the foreshore - thank you for your dedication and your belief that we can do politics better. I am immensely proud of what we have accomplished since I was elected in August 2024, including supporting the local community through sponsorships, fundraisers, mutual aid initiatives and assisting constituents with a wide range of issues, many of whom had felt it was the first time they were being listened to.
Once again I want to thank the people of Nightcliff from the bottom of my heart for the incredible privilege of being their representative.
Thank you for respecting mine and my family's privacy at this challenging time.
