Statement In Relation To Darwin LNG Plant

CSIRO

This statement clarifies errors in an ABC story published 3 September 2025.

CSIRO was engaged by Santos on two separate occasions in relation the Darwin LNG (DLNG) Plant. This work did not involve monitoring, prevention or remediation advice related to the leak.

  • In 2021, CSIRO conducted a desktop review of third parties' methane emission measurement methods for the DLNG storage tank. CSIRO also reviewed third parties' proposals to deploy a fixed monitoring system for the tank. CSIRO did not undertake any direct emissions monitoring of the DLNG storage tank. The results of the third-party monitoring of the DLNG storage tank indicated methane fugitive emissions within normal operating ranges for natural gas infrastructure.
  • In 2024, CSIRO conducted a background methane assessment of the DLNG project site to assess background methane concentration around the facility and the surrounding region. The background methane recorded concentrations were comparable to those measured in other areas in the NT and other parts of Australia. This activity did not include involve any direct monitoring of the DLNG storage tank.

CSIRO routinely provides independent scientific and technical advice—including commercial-in-confidence work—to industry and government to support decision-making but holds no regulatory role.
