Wollongong's new regional tennis hub at Beaton Park is moving closer to completion this week, with remediation works on the court surfacing starting. The opening of this multi-court precinct, a project of regional significance, is anticipated in January 2026.
The project has already delivered new courts and supporting facilities, which have been opened in stages for community use since early 2025. These include international-standard cushioned acrylic courts – the same surface used at the Australian Open, two community hard courts, four synthetic grass courts, a multipurpose court, control room, shade structures, and spectator seating as well as new floodlighting, additional parking, pathways, and soft landscaping.
While the project has faced challenges, including the early discovery of asbestos and surface issues - known as "bubbling"- on some courts, Council has been working collaboratively with the contractor and sub-contractor to fix this. Cooler winter temperatures delayed repairs to the courts, but with warmer weather now here, remediation works will begin this week and are expected to be completed over the coming months. With continued good weather these works are expected to be completed by the end of the year.
Once fully completed, the Beaton Park tennis hub will be recognised as one of the few Tier 2 competition venues in NSW. It will position Wollongong as a destination for international, national and state-level tennis competitions, while continuing to support local and district play, coaching, school programs, casual hire and community-focused activities.
Council acknowledges and appreciates the financial support of the Federal Government, NSW State Government and Tennis NSW. We look forward to celebrating the formal opening of Wollongong's new tennis hub in early 2026.
