Statement On Draft Victorian Default Offer

Today's draft Victorian Default Offer provides some welcome bill relief, but many consumers could save more by switching to cheaper competitive market deals, according to the peak body for retailers.

The Australian Energy Council's Chief Executive, Louisa Kinnear, said, "The VDO is designed to be a safety net rather than the best deal available.

"If you take the time to check the market and switch you can expect to make meaningful savings.

"It is encouraging most Victorians are already on competitive deals, but we encourage anyone who hasn't made the move to contact your retailer to see if they have a better deal for your circumstances.

"You can also compare prices by going on to the independent Victorian Energy Compare (www.compare.energy.vic.gov.au) website. There will be competitive deals that can provide real savings."
