The Victorian Government's proposed redevelopment of the Spotswood train station and the removal of level crossings on the Werribee line has generally been welcomed by Hobsons Bay City Council.

Commenting on the announcement, Hobsons Bay Mayor Peter Hemphill said the investment in Spotswood Station presented an ideal opportunity for the government to bring forward important planning work for the WEST East Metro Rail.

"The WEST East Metro Rail proposed by respected experts, the Rail Futures Institute, requires a new underground station at Spotswood in addition to the current station, with a proper bus interchange," Cr Hemphill said.

"We encourage the Government to bring forward planning for the WEST East Metro Rail to ensure the redeveloped station meets the requirements of this much-needed rail project."

Cr Hemphill also welcomed the proposed level crossing removals at Hudsons Road in Spotswood, Maidstone Street in Altona, and Maddox Road in North Williamstown.

"The removals will ease congestion on these major thoroughfares, which will be welcomed by Hobsons Bay residents and business operators," he said.

However, Cr Hemphill said the level crossing removal at Champion Road in North Williamstown raised serious concerns and Council would urgently seek to meet with the government over this plan.

"It is disappointing that Council was not consulted about the closure of Champion Road, which will divide Newport and North Williamstown," Cr Hemphill said.

"This is a major thoroughfare between the two suburbs and its closure will have a significant impact on residents and businesses in the area.

"Residents in North Williamstown will need to find other routes into Newport, which is likely to further clog other arterial roads.

"It could have a devastating effect on businesses in Challis Street, Newport."
