Ararat Rural City Council is pleased to support a new outdoor exhibition by the Ararat Embroiderers Guild in the Barkly Street Laneway, showcasing the skill and creativity of local makers. The exhibition opens on Friday 24 April and invites residents and visitors to take a closer look at the intricate work being created in our community.
The Ararat Embroiderers Guild is a small, welcoming group of crafters who meet regularly at the Ararat Harness Racing Club (Trotting Track) in Blake Street, Ararat. Members gather from 10 am to 3 pm on the first and third Saturday, and the second and fourth Tuesday of each month, to work on projects, share ideas, and learn from one another.
The Guild's work covers a wide range of techniques, including cross stitch, canvas work, sashiko, appliqué, patchwork, knitting, and crochet. The Barkly Street Laneway exhibition will highlight this diversity, with pieces on display that reflect both traditional methods and contemporary designs.
Mayor Cr Bob Sanders said the exhibition is a testament to the time, care, and dedication that local residents invest in their creative pursuits. "On behalf of Council, I want to thank the Ararat Embroiderers Guild for bringing their work into the heart of our town," Mayor Sanders said. "These are people who quietly get on with the job, week in, week out, and this exhibition gives everyone the chance to see the detail, patience, and pride that goes into each piece."
"Council is committed to supporting local groups who help make Ararat a welcoming and interesting place to live, work, and visit," he said. "I encourage everyone to wander through the laneway, have a good look at the skilled embroidery on display, and perhaps be inspired to pick up a needle themselves."
The exhibition is presented in partnership with Ararat Gallery TAMA and Ararat Rural City Council, as part of an ongoing program to activate the Barkly Street Laneway with local art and community projects. The laneway is located between Lyle Eales Stores and The Reject Shop on Barkly Street, adjacent to the K Hub car park.
Residents who are interested in learning or sharing embroidery and textile skills are encouraged to contact the Ararat Embroiderers Guild via Facebook or [email protected].
