Stock On Rural Roads

Council is advising drivers to be aware of stock on rural roads following notification fromRiverina Local Land Servicesof approvals being issued to farmers permitting the grazing of livestock along several roads in the Benerembah and Willbriggie districts.

With dwindling on-farm feed, stock producers are turning to roadside vegetation as source of food for their cattle. Over the next several weeks, Bringagee Road, Murrumbidgee River Road and the Kidman Way to the south of the Willbriggie railway line will see travelling stock feeding within the adjacent road reserves during daylight hours.

All drivers are reminded there is a legislative obligation to allow priority to stock, drovers, working dogs and any vehicle associated with the droving of sheep/cattle within a zone where 'Stock Ahead' signs are displayed. Therefore, it is important for drivers to slow down when approaching the zone, follow directions on signs and requests from drovers, be patient and especially keep a look out for working dogs and horses monitoring the herd.

Significant penalties apply to drivers failing to give way to travelling stock within a designated stock area.
