Stonnington celebrates new multi-sensory sculpture by internationally acclaimed artist

Art-lovers are invited to celebrate the installation of a multi-sensory artwork by internationally acclaimed artist Anton Hasell. 'Twisted Bell' located on the Yarra River main trail, at 11am, Sunday 11 August.

City of Stonnington Mayor, Cr Steve Stefanopoulos, said the artwork was commissioned as part of council's 'Public Open Space Art Program,' which makes art accessible for the whole of the community.

"World-class artworks, like 'Twisted Bell', help shape creative and dynamic public spaces that the whole community can enjoy", said Cr Stefanopoulos.

"Passers-by are encouraged to touch the sculpture and hear the twisted form come to life with low rumbling sounds – giving a voice to its surrounds.

"I would encourage art-lovers, novices, residents and visitors to come down to help celebrate the launch of the latest addition to our public art program."

Best known for the Federation Bells at Birrarung Marr in central Melbourne, artist Anton Hasell said he spent years researching the science and art of the bell design.

The three metre bell towers above the landscape, reflecting the light and the movement of the river.

Artist Anton Hasell said, "'Twisted Bell' mirrors the serpentine flow of the river and the eels swimming in it, while its low pitch hum, when patted by hand, generates a drone tone".

Commissioned by the City of Stonnington Twisted Bell complements the council's Yarra River biodiversity project, and provides an opportunity for the community to interact with and celebrate the Yarra River.

"I hope visitors will enjoy a multi-sensory journey through touch, sight and sound, and experience a contemplative moment on the banks of the river as the sound from the artwork sensitively reflects the ever changing water flowing past," added Hasell.

'Twisted Bell' can be found next to the Yarra River main trail between Yarra and Darling Street, South Yarra.

City of Stonnington Mayor, Cr Steve Stefanopoulos and Anton Hasell will launch 'Twisted Bell' Sunday 11 August, 11am.

Residents and community members are invited to join the celebration, with refreshments available on the day.
