Storm Season Ends In ACT

Today, 30 April 2026, marks the end of the storm season in the ACT.

The ACT State Emergency Service (ACTSES) has received over 800 requests for assistance, since the start of the season, largely driven by overland flooding and widespread storm damage across the Territory.

ACTSES volunteers maintained a high operational tempo throughout the season, responding to all incidents as severe weather events repeatedly impacted the Canberra community.

Storm and flood response was supported by a coordinated collaboration across government.

ACTSES were supported closely by ACT Fire & Rescue, the ACT Rural Fire Service & the City and Environment Directorate. This approach enabled resources to be deployed quickly and effectively, even during periods of peak demand.

Although the storm season has officially come to a close, the dedication of ACTSES volunteers continues with year-round training and readiness to respond to future emergencies across the Territory.

The ACT community is encouraged to do the same by keeping emergency plans up to date, completing property maintenance, and staying alert to changing weather conditions.

Minister for Police, fire and Emergency Services, Dr Marisa Paterson, has commended the ACTSES for their efforts over a busy season.

"While the ACTSES led the Territory's response to storm and severe weather events this season, their role extends far beyond that. ACTSES volunteers also supported community events, assisted with missing person searches, and continued to engage closely with the community. This breadth of work highlights the vital role ACTSES plays in emergency services," Dr Paterson said.

"This storm season has reinforced the importance of highly trained emergency services and strong community preparedness. The work carried out by the ACTSES continues to make a genuine difference for Canberrans when it matters most."

Quotes attributable to ACTSES Chief Officer, Steve Forbes:

"The severe weather events that affected the ACT this season are exactly what our ACTSES volunteers train and prepare for. They expect challenging conditions, and they genuinely thrive on supporting their community when it matters most.

"As we move into the off-season, we're asking the community to take this time to organise permanent repairs where temporary ACTSES fixes were applied and to contact your insurers early. Taking these steps now makes a real difference next season and helps ensure ACTSES resources are available for those who need them most."
