The Allan Labor Government is keeping one of Victoria's most iconic bridges strong and stable for years to come, with crews delivering a massive program of maintenance works on the West Gate Bridge.
Backed by $24 million in the Victorian Budget 2025/26 vital maintenance works are underway on the bridge, ensuring it remains refreshed and ready to service the 205,000 vehicles that use it each day.
A team of 15 dedicated experts will help to deliver maintenance works on the West Gate Bridge year-round and are tasked with monitoring the bridge to keep everyone on the bridge moving - these works include full inspections of key structures of the bridge, laying down asphalt on the road and protective coating on concrete piers.
This package of works will reduce the need for unplanned closures, minimise disruption to road users, and ensure additional load restrictions for freight and heavy vehicles are not required.
Since its opening in 1978, daily traffic volumes on the iconic bridge have surged from 40,000 vehicles to more than 205,000 in the 2020s.
The West Gate Bridge also continues to support Victoria's freight, port and shipping and tourism industries, with 30,000 freight vehicles using the bridge every day, and these vehicle loads have also increased substantially, from 25 tonnes to as much as 68 tonnes.
The West Gate Tunnel Project will transform the way people move across the west, taking thousands of trucks off local roads - while delivering a vital alternative to the West Gate Bridge.
As stated by Minister for Roads and Road Safety Melissa Horne
"As the West Gate Bridge reaches its 47th year of service, it continues to serve as a lifeline for our freight, tourism and port industries, and an essential part of the state's transport network."
"The West Gate Bridge is a Victorian icon, which is why are continuing to invest in its maintenance to keep it standing strong for decades to come."
