Strike Force Vulcan arrest - Ascot scrub fire

Strike Force Vulcan detectives have charged a man in relation to a fire in Ascot on Sunday, 26 January 2020.

Around 3pm, it is alleged the man was walking along the footpath on Grandstand Road in Ascot when he set fire to a small tree on the verge. The fire was ignited in close proximity to houses that back onto Grandstand Road.

The man kept walking along Grandstand Road and approached the Garratt Road Bridge, crossing to the other side of the road. It is alleged the man set fire to a large section of bamboo plants located next to a Western Power Station.

Department of Fire and Emergency Services attended and extinguished both fires.

The 36-year-old man from Belmont has been charged with:-

• Two counts of Wilfully light or cause to be lit a fire likely to injure or damage.

The maximum penalty for this offence is 20 years imprisonment.

He is due to appear before the Perth Magistrates Court today, 4 March 2020.
