Structure Fire - Larrakeyah

Northern Territory Fire and Rescue Service and NT Police are investigating a structure fire at a unit complex in Larrakeyah early this morning.

At 3:12am, reports were received in the Joint Emergency Services Communications Centre of flames seen and explosions heard in the carpark beneath a unit complex on Merkur Court.

Firefighters arrived on scene within three minutes of the first call, with Police and St John Ambulance arriving shortly after. The fire was brought under control within 15 minutes and fully extinguished at around 3:40am.

Acting Deputy Chief Fire Officer Joshua Fischer said, "This morning serves as an important reminder as to how quickly fires can start and spread, and the importance of working smoke alarms and having a written and practiced home fire escape plan. I would like to commend all members involved, along with the residents of the complex who quickly raised the alarm. Thirteen firefighters from Darwin and Casuarina extinguished the fire, wearing breathing apparatus, and managed the evacuation of approximately 20 residents from nine units. Thankfully no one was injured."
