Swan Hill Rural City Council is excited to announce registrations of interest are now open for the highly anticipated 2027 Yamagata Student Exchange Program.
Mayor of Swan Hill Rural City Council, Cr Stuart King, said the long-running program provides secondary school students in Swan Hill with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to immerse themselves in a unique cultural experience while building lifelong friendships and global connections.
"I might be giving away my age a bit now, but I had the absolute privilege of participating in the original Swan Hill-Yamagata student exchange in 1986. It remains one of the highlights of my life - opening my eyes to the world of travel, new cultures and lifelong connections.
"Since then, members of my own family have also taken part in the exchange, and I wholeheartedly encourage local students to consider this fantastic opportunity," Cr King said.
Cr King said participating students are paired with a student from Yamagata for a home-stay experience, spending approximately 10 days living with each other's families, alternating between Yamagata and Swan Hill.
"This exchange offers students a unique chance to experience everyday life in another country, gain insight into local customs, traditions and education systems, and develop a broader understanding of the world around them," he said.
"Students will attend local schools, participate in group activities and official receptions, and enjoy an exciting range of cultural and educational experiences. These may include visits to local facilities and farms, a mountain hostel, a seaside resort, and iconic attractions in Tokyo. Of course, it would not be complete without a day at Tokyo Disneyland too."
Cr King encouraged local families to embrace the opportunity to experience cultural exchange, strengthen international understanding, and create lasting friendships across borders.
Who can apply?
Applications are open to secondary students in Year 8-11 (in 2027), who reside in Swan Hill municipality.
