- The Premier's Telethon Challenge inspires WA students to fundraise for sick kids
- New opportunity for school children to learn about the importance of serving others
- Chance to win a rare opportunity to be involved in the Telethon TV spectacle
Premier Roger Cook and Education Minister Sabine Winton have today launched The Premier's Telethon Challenge at Poynter Primary School to encourage students to help vulnerable children across the State.
Starting on Friday 9 May, students will have an opportunity to raise vital funds for Telethon while developing a deeper understanding of the values of generosity, empathy and teamwork.
The challenge - which runs until Friday, 19 September - will serve as a springboard for empowering young people to make a positive difference, while teaching them about philanthropy and the power of giving.
Public, Catholic and independent school students from Kindergarten to Year 12 will come up with creative ways of raising the most money across a range of categories, including:
- primary school fundraiser;
- secondary school fundraiser;
- primary student writer; and
- secondary student writer.
The top school in each category will have the chance to win a range of prizes including a behind-the-scenes experience at the annual live Telethon weekend in October.
In addition to fundraising, students can reflect on their experience by entering a storytelling competition and submitting a written or visual piece about charitable giving and helping others.
Winners will have their stories published in The West Australian.

As stated by Premier Roger Cook:
"The Premier's Telethon Challenge is an exciting initiative that encourages community spirit, teamwork, and empathy among students.
"All schools and students across the State can join in to raise funds which will provide life-changing opportunities for sick, vulnerable and disadvantaged children.
"It's a fantastic program, which we hope will inspire the next generation of leaders to build a brighter future for WA children in need."
As stated by Education Minister Sabine Winton:
"The Premier's Telethon Challenge is an opportunity for school communities to come together in support of sick and disadvantaged children in Western Australia.
"The challenge highlights the incredible things that can be achieved when schools, students and families work together.
"It also helps teach students the importance of helping others. I want to encourage all students to be as creative as possible with their fundraising ideas during this challenge."
As stated by Telethon Chairman Richard Goyder:
"Telethon is pleased and proud to join the Premier of Western Australia in launching the Premier's Telethon Schools Challenge, an inspiring new initiative that empowers students from around the State to help change the lives of WA's most sick and vulnerable children.
"For nearly 60 years, children have been at the heart of Telethon's story, from donating pocket money to running community fundraisers. This challenge builds on that legacy, celebrating the spirit of generosity that makes WA the giving State.
"This new Telethon Schools Challenge is about more than raising funds for sick kids. It's about giving young people the chance to lead with empathy, take initiative, and experience the significant and positive impact they can have in their local communities.
"Thanks to the passion and dedication of our schools and students, the future of giving in Western Australia is brighter than ever."
