Whittington Primary School students took their learning outdoors at the Geelong Botanic Gardens last year to explore healthy living, food value and sustainable choices.
The Botanic Gardens team partnered with the school to design a hands-on program for Year 3 and 4 students. As part of the program, students helped care for and maintain sections of the vegetable garden.
The experience empowered students to connect with their community while developing a sense of ownership and belonging.
The program provided Whittington Primary School, a low socio-economic index school, with enhanced access to food literacy and sustainability education, creating new pathways for nature-based learning and community engagement.
Teachers reported that student attendance increased on program days, showing the hands-on focus was a strong motivator for students to come to school.
Following the success, the City's Community Strengthening officers are working with the Botanic Gardens team to expand pathways for more local schools and diverse community groups to take part in healthy lifestyle learning and environmental opportunities.
