Summer music series set for Cairns return

Cairns Summer Sounds is returning in 2022 with some of the biggest names of the Australian music scene set to perform at Cairns Performing Arts Centre (CPAC) in February.

One of Australia's most exciting touring acts, alternative rock band Ocean Alley, will open Cairns Summer Sounds on 4 and 5 February, kicking off a string of shows presented by Council and Tourism and Events Queensland (TEQ) at CPAC.

Julia Zamiro, Brian Nankervis and the legendary RocKwiz Orkestra will bring RocKwiz Live! to the stage on 26 February, along with some surprise special guests.

Additional artists performing at Cairns Summer Sounds will be announced via social media and the CPAC website in the coming weeks.

Cairns Mayor Bob Manning said the calibre of the artists and the respective shows would provide a boost to the city's economy.

"This year's series resulted in more than 6000 ticket sales, with over a quarter of those attending coming from outside the Cairns region," Cr Manning said.

"This newly announced series of shows will entice visitors to our region, providing our local hotels and traders with a boost during our traditionally slow season.

"Staging the shows at CPAC means the weather is not an issue for the thousands of patrons expected to attend the series, who will be treated to performances by renowned artists in a state-of-the-art venue."

Cr Manning acknowledged the support of the State Government in helping to bring these high calibre shows to Cairns.

"Cairns has a relationship with Tourism and Events Queensland and once again we are happy to be working together to bring high calibre events regional Queensland," he said.

"We all know that the arts and entertainment community was one of the hardest hit by the COVID pandemic, so it is fantastic so see the industry getting back on its feet and we are delighted to see these artists coming to Tropical North Queensland."

The inaugural Summer Sounds concert series was staged earlier this year, featuring Tones and I, Amy Shark, Bernard Fanning and John Butler.

Assistant Tourism Minister and Member for Cairns Michael Healy said great events like Cairns Summer Sounds were important to the Palaszczuk Government's Economic Recovery Plan.

"Events bring visitors to the region which benefits local tourism operators from accommodation providers to restaurants and hotels," Mr Healy said.

"Cairns Summer Sounds builds on the city's reputation as destination for entertainment, as well as being home to some of the world's best visitor experiences.

"We know when visitors come to Cairns for events, they make the most of their time here with an Indigenous cultural experience and a trip to the Reef, or our World Heritage-listed rainforests.

"Events like Cairns Summer Sounds support jobs and make an important contribution to our city's visitor economy."
