Community safety has been elevated across the Territory after the first month of Police Public Safety Officers (PPSOs) hitting the streets to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour.
Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro said PPSO Squad One had made a genuine difference in delivering a safer Territory.
"This is the biggest police reform in a generation and these 21 PPSOs are helping my Government to unwind Labor's crime crisis," the Chief Minister said.
"In less than two years, we have already reduced the total number of offences by more than 10,000 a year and victims of crime are down by more than 3,400 than when Labor was in office.
"My government has made good progress so far, but I can assure Territorians that we know there is still more work to do, and in our year of growth, certainty and security, reducing crime, rebuilding the economy and restoring our unique Territory lifestyle will remain our number one priority."
In their first month on the beat, the Darwin and Palmerston based PPSOs have:
Been operational across Greater Darwin and Palmerston as part of Operation Ventura.Been dedicated to social order policing and assisting with major events including the Royal Darwin Show and the Mindil Beach airshow for Pitch Black, and will be operational at the Great Northern Darwin Cup and the Test Match Cricket.Conducted 329 high visibility foot patrols and 49 licensed premises checks.Screened 381 people under wanding authorities with seven weapons located and destroyed.Seized and destroyed 1,198 litres of alcohol and issued 186 Banned Drinker Orders.Placed 91 persons into protective custody, made 30 arrests and issued 35 infringement notices.
In Alice Springs in their first week of operations, PPSOs:
Have been rostered to undertake social order duties, point-of-sale inspections and are assisting with special operations.Completed 34 reassurance patrols and 12 licensed premises checks.Screened 783 people as part of point-of-sale inspections with 123 people refused service.Two people were arrested on outstanding warrants, and one person was placed in protective custody.Four litres of alcohol have been seized and destroyed with two Banned Drinker Orders issued.
In Katherine, PPSOs:
Scanned 847 people during the Katherine Show.Assisted the Katherine Housing Operation alongside Territory Housing targeting Anti-Social Behaviours, and tenant engagement.Worked with Katherine Town Council for Compliance in Dog Registrations and Menacing Dogs.Carried out Point of Sale Intervention duties at takeaway licensed premises.Issued 15 Banned Drinker Orders.
The Chief Minister said the importance of PPSOs in creating safer communities would continue to grow, with Squad 2 set to graduate in September.
"My Government is committed to making the Territory the best place to live, work, visit and invest," the Chief Minister said.
