The Allan Labor Government is making sure one of the busiest and best trauma centres in Australia can continue delivering world-class care, backed by a more than $292 million investment to future proof the hospital for generations to come.
The Alfred Hospital is a keystone of the Victorian Health System - treating Victoria's most acute and complex patients as one of Victoria's longest running major tertiary health services and one of only two adult trauma services in Victoria.
This funding will support important infrastructure upgrades at The Alfred, improving patient experience and supporting the work of dedicated health care workers.
This includes upgrading patient wards in the Main Ward Block, enhancing fire safety, and reinforcing critical infrastructure systems such as the air handling units, electrical infrastructure and the heating and cooling plant.
Founded in 1871, The Alfred is Melbourne's oldest hospital still operating at its original site, on the corner of Commercial and Punt Road in Prahran, with much of the building constructed in the 1960s.
A design team of architects, engineers, quantity surveyors and building surveyors has been appointed to provide specialist expertise on the project.
They will kickstart the important process of updating feasibility review and design processes in collaboration with Alfred Health. Careful planning is critical to ensure works have minimal disruption to patient care, ensuring families continue to get the quality health care they need, when they need it.
The Labor Government has provided more than $153 million in grant funding to The Alfred, supporting the delivery of more than 100 projects and upgrades - including the upgraded $10m Central Sterile Service Department (CSSD).
The bigger, fit-for-purpose CSSD is a specialised area that sterilises, cleans, packs and distributes hospital equipment. This includes the equipment surgeons use, and without it, operating theatres can't function.
This $292 million upgrade is being delivered by the Victorian Health Building Authority in partnership with Alfred Health.
As stated by Minister for Health Infrastructure Melissa Horne
"The Alfred has been delivering world-class care for more than 150 years - these upgrades are vital to ensuring more Victorians are supported by the dedicated doctors, nurses and allied health staff now and into the future."
As stated by Member for Southern Metropolitan Region John Berger
"The Alfred provides amazing care for Victorians right across the state and these upgrades will support our hardworking hospital staff to keep doing what they do best - in modern and safe facilities."
