The Tasmanian Government's 2024-25 Budget will deliver significant new funding to maintain and upgrade our valuable heritage assets, with the iconic Port Arthur Historic Site set to benefit from $16 million in upgrades over the next two years.
Minister for the Arts, Madeleine Ogilvie, said this investment will enable the Port Arthur Historic Site Management Authority (PAHSMA) to carry out essential upgrades and ensure it continues to attract visitors for years to come.
"Not only will this funding ensure the Port Arthur Historic Site remains a safe, accessible, and sustainable destination for the thousands of visitors it welcomes each year, but this investment will also provide certainty to local businesses and residents, including the Port Arthur Motor Inn, NRMA Caravan Park, Stewarts Bay Lodge, and Port Arthur General Store," said Minister Ogilvie.
"Our Budget will support our heritage sector, and ensure Tasmania continues to be the best place to live, work and raise a family.
"The $16 million investment over the next two years means that PAHSMA can focus on its core mission—conserving, maintaining, and interpreting this world-renowned heritage site. By addressing legacy infrastructure issues, we are helping secure the future of this important landmark, while also promoting growth and development across the region.
"In addition to servicing the UNESCO World Heritage Site, PAHSMA provides water and sewerage services to a number of local businesses and residents on the Tasman Peninsula. These upgrades are critical to supporting growth for both the local community and tourism sector.
"The upgrades will enhance PAHSMA's capacity to continue delivering outstanding visitor experiences, supporting local businesses, and preserving Tasmania's rich cultural heritage for future generations."
The 2024-25 State Budget will be handed down on 12 September and will deliver on the Tasmanian Liberal Government's 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania's Future.
The State Budget drives the delivery of our Plan, which takes action right now on the things that matter to Tasmanians and makes life affordable.
Treasurer, Michael Ferguson, said the 2024-25 State Budget will be very good for jobs in Tasmania with ongoing investment in economically-productive infrastructure while delivering increased funding for the things Tasmanians care about like cost of living, health and housing.
"It will ensure Tasmania continues to be strong, healthy and safe," the Treasurer said.
