Supporting the next generation of rural leaders

The Hodgman Liberal Government recognises the important role that young people play in maintaining and strengthening Tasmania’s rural communities and, in turn, growing the agricultural sector.

Today I attended Rural Youth Organisation of Tasmania Inc (Rural Youth Tasmania) 68th Annual General Meeting, , where I reaffirmed the Hodgman Liberal Government’s election commitment to increase the organisation’s funding to $70,000 over four years.

This funding will be used to further develop young people through rural leadership programs.

Developing members’ skills in governance, work health and safety, and strategic planning will benefit Rural Youth Tasmania now while cultivating the next generation of agricultural leaders in Tasmania.

Tasmania’s agriculture and food sector is a key pillar of the State’s economy, contributing $1.5 billion a year to our economy, so it is important the next generation of leaders have the knowledge and skills to further strengthen Tasmania as an agricultural powerhouse.

The Hodgman Liberal Government has set a target to further grow the value of Tasmania’s agricultural sector tenfold to $10 billion per year by 2050, and we will need to ensure the leaders of the agricultural leaders of the future are prepared.

I would like to thank Rural Youth Tasmania for their great work throughout the year, and wish them all the best for the remainder of the year.
