Suspicious person - Alice Springs

Northern Territory Police are investigating an alleged incident involving a suspicious person in Alice Springs yesterday.

Police received a report of an unknown man allegedly approached and grabbed the backpack of a 13-year-old girl as she walked through the Jim McConville oval just after 3pm, Northern Territory Police say

No one was injured.

Acting Superintendent Pauline Vicary said it is important that parents/carers speak with their children and remind them to be alert to the environment they are walking or riding in.

"It does raise the issue of what we tell our children to do in a situation such as this. If possible, children should walk with friends and avoid walking into groups of people who are unknown to them," said Acting Superintendent Vicary

"On receiving this information, Police did comb the area looking for the suspicious person, but were unable to locate anyone.

"Regardless of the outcome, the young girl did the right thing and told her parents who reported it to police immediately.

"While nothing sinister has occurred, we can never be too vigilant in ensuring the safety of the community and our children within it, said Acting Superintendent Vicary.
