Construction is now underway on a brand-new multi-purpose hall for Sutherland Public School, a key election commitment of the Minns Labor Government as part of our work to rebuild public education and ensure families have access to world-class local public schools.
The new and improved hall will accommodate whole-school assemblies and include a stage, an indoor sport court, out of school hours care (OOSH) facilities, a canteen, and a covered outdoor learning area (COLA).
The school's previous near-100-year-old hall, which was small and could not accommodate the school's needs, will be refurbished for use as a classroom and additional office space.
Construction of the long-awaited new facility is on track for completion late next year, ready for use in time for Day 1 Term 1 2027.
The new multi-purpose hall is the largest investment in Sutherland Public School in at least 20 years and the first major upgrade since Labor was last in the Government.
The project is part of the Minns Labor Government's record $9 billion investment in the 2025-26 Budget to deliver new and upgraded schools across NSW.
Acting Minister for Education and Early Learning Courtney Houssos said:
"The Minns Labor Government is investing in vital upgrades for public schools to ensure all students across the state have access to a world-class public education close to home.
"As we promised, this new multi-purpose hall at Sutherland Public School will be big enough to accommodate the entire school while expanding the opportunities for students in physical education and performing arts.
"We are proud to be delivering this project over the coming months, and I look forward to seeing how students make use of this facility in the not-too-distant future."
Member for Heathcote Maryanne Stuart said:
"Labor is delivering on our commitment to provide families in Sutherland with a new, modern school hall to meet the needs of the school community.
"The community has fought so hard for a new hall that would accommodate the whole school and I am proud that Labor is delivering.
"For too long, Sutherland Public School was ignored by the Liberals who failed to deliver the investment this community had been crying out for."
"The new hall and COLA will give students a wonderful space in which to gather, play, learn and perform, and it will serve the community well into the future."
Sutherland Public School principal Rebecca Ferguson said:
"The new facility will support the school's Physical Education program by allowing students to participate in high-energy activities like dance and indoor sports, regardless of the weather.
"Additionally, it will offer chances for our students to display their talents in Dance and Band performances, especially during special occasions like Public Education Week.
"New and exciting events led by the school or the P&C, such as school discos or end of year celebrations, can also be held in the new hall increasing the school's connection with the wider community."
