Tasman Highway at Sideling to reopen Monday

Michael Ferguson, Minister for Infrastructure and Transport

The Rockliff Liberal Government is working hard to make our roads safer and more efficient across the State.

Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Michael Ferguson said it was his great pleasure to confirm that the Tasman Highway through the Sideling will reopen to traffic from 7:00 am on Monday, 27 February 2023 following extensive repairs to damage caused during last October's floods.

"There will continue to be lane closures and reduced speed limits along the highway as work continues on several smaller repair sites, as well as the separate Sideling Upgrade project," Minister Ferguson said.

"However, at least one lane will remain open at all times.

"The completed repairs involved a massive rebuilding and reinforcement of a steep embankment which collapsed due to the severe rainfall, undermining the highway and requiring its closure.

"The landslip went several hundred metres down the bank.

"A 7-metre high support structure of 190 rock-filled gabion baskets has been constructed to support the road.

"To ensure a stable foundation for the baskets, it was necessary to excavate a couple of metres down.

"Contractors worked seven days a week following the flood damage to rebuild and reopen the highway as soon as possible and minimise the disruption to the local community.

"I thank all members of the community for their patience and understanding while we completed the repairs and thanks are also due to the Department of State Growth and its contractors for their efforts in completing this massive task in difficult terrain.

"Work will also continue on the Sideling upgrade project with the same lane closures and reduced speed limits in place as before the highway was closed. The current works involve upgrading the 4.5-kilometre section of the Tasman Highway from Corkerys Road to Whish-Wilson Road, Springfield. Works on this section include road widening, improvements to the road base, new stopping bays, drainage works and safety improvements.

"When local residents start driving on the Sideling in coming weeks, they will be amazed at the scale and the quality of the much wider road as it climbs the windy Eastern side travelling up to the lookout.

"The Sideling only remains closed to articulated heavy vehicles while this project progresses. It is due for completion in May 2024."
