Karinya Youth Services plays a critical role in supporting young women experiencing periods of crisis, including offering short-term and transitional accommodation for up to six young women aged 13 to 20.
Minister for Housing and Planning, Kerry Vincent said work is underway to add a further three bedrooms with ensuites to the property, along with expanded living areas and improved communal spaces.
"This expansion will enable Karinya to support more young women in crisis through access to safe housing and support," Minister Vincent said.
"Karinya changes young peoples' lives, and I am pleased to see this upgrade being delivered so more young people can benefit.
"Young Tasmanians that come through these doors are supported with education, training and employment, helping them build a solid foundation for their future.
"This is about fostering independence and setting young Tasmanians up for success right from the get-go."
The redevelopment also includes upgrades to building systems, expanded outdoor areas and improved integration of existing facilities, ensuring a more functional, modern and supportive environment.
In addition to crisis accommodation, Karinya Youth Services delivers a range of complementary programs that extend its impact across the community.
- The Karinya Youth Transitional Tenancy program, supporting young people in longer-term housing;
- The Karinya Young Mums program, assisting young mothers and their children. Karinya leases 20 properties from Homes Tasmania for use in the program, with funding from the Department for Education, Children and Young People; and
- The Karinya Pantry, which provides essential food support to more than 50 households, helping to reduce food insecurity for those experiencing hardship.
