Tasmanian Firms Urged to Seek Plastic Recycling Grants

Roger Jaensch, Minister for Environment and Climate Change

The Rockliff Liberal Government continues to support the State's recycling infrastructure and encourages local businesses to apply for project funding from the Recycling Modernisation Fund Plastics Technology Stream.

Minister for Environment and Climate Change, Roger Jaensch, welcomed the Australian Government's new $60 million national funding program.

"Eligible projects need to focus on hard-to-recycle plastics and the Tasmanian Government wants to ensure the State's businesses take advantage of the funding available," Minister Jaensch said.

The funding program is open to eligible projects for new infrastructure, technology, processes, machinery or equipment, an improvement or expansion of existing infrastructure or commercialisation, or scaling up to build or increase existing capacity.

"Because Tasmania is not guaranteed a share of the federal funding, we need to ensure our waste and recycling sector puts forward strong proposals and we will support the best of them to maximise their chances in the federal process", Minister Jaensch said.

The Minister thanked the Waste and Resource Recovery Board for allocating up to $1.2 million from the landfill levy to support eligible applications from Tasmanian businesses for this grant round.

"The Rockliff Liberal Government is committed to reducing the volume of waste that ends up in landfill and growing Tasmania's circular economy – this is a good example of how the landfill levy can help achieve that goal," Minister Jaensch said.

"We are also investing in the delivery of Organics Waste Processing, recycling of end-of-life tyres and roll-out of Tasmania's container refund scheme, Recycle Rewards".

"These initiatives are supporting our goal to reduce the volume of waste entering landfill and our environment, and generating new businesses and jobs for Tasmanians."

The initial application process for Tasmanian projects will be administrated by the Department of Natural Resources and Environment Tasmania (NRE Tas).
