Tasmanian Pharmacies Support 10,000 UTI Treatments

Tasmanian Government

Tasmanian pharmacies have delivered 10,000 treatments for women with uncomplicated urinary tract infections (UTIs) since the Tasmanian Government launched the initiative last year.

Premier Jeremy Rockliff commended community pharmacies on the milestone, saying it reflects the Government's plan to expand the role of pharmacists and improve access to affordable, community-based care.

"Pharmacists have treated 10,000 episodes of uncomplicated UTIs for Tasmanian women since March 2024, improving access to treatment and freeing up thousands of GP appointments," the Premier said.

"Pharmacists are trusted frontline health professionals, and it's no surprise this initiative has been successfully rolled out across more than 130 pharmacies state-wide.

"We are delivering for Tasmania by making it easier to access health care when and where you need it.

"We've made strong progress implementing the recommendations from the independent pharmacy scope of practice report, and we're now going further to support pharmacists to upskill and expand their services."

Last month, the Tasmanian Government announced post-graduate training scholarships for pharmacists to gain full scope of practice credentials, including the ability to provide hormonal contraception services.

Minister for Health, Mental Health and Wellbeing, Bridget Archer, said the training will enable pharmacists to treat more conditions.

"Our Government has already enhanced pharmacists' scope of practice through initiatives like the UTI program and the Oral Contraceptive Pill Resupply initiative, which has supported more than 350 women since July 2024," Minister Archer said.

"Once trained, pharmacists will also be able to treat conditions such as ear infections, reflux, rhinitis, shingles, eczema and wounds, further freeing up GP appointments and easing pressure on hospitals.

"We are slashing red tape across the health system, saving Tasmanians time and money."
