Bega Valley Shire Council will enter into commercial negotiations with the NSW Telco Authority (NSWTA) regarding a land lease for part of Lot 1 DP 502253 (146 Bega Street), Tathra.
The lease is part of the state government's Critical Communications Enhancement Program (CCEP).
Lot 1 DP 502253 is Council-owned operational land that contains a water reservoir, Rural Fire Service (RFS) shed and a small storage shed used by the Tathra Surf Lifesaving Club.
Mayor Russell Fitzpatrick said Councillors previously resolved to work closely with NSWTA and the local community to find a suitable location for critical communications infrastructure for emergency services to communicate with each other.
"At a Council meeting in February, we considered a proposal from the NSWTA to lease land at Lawrence Park in Tathra for a 25-metre pole and equipment shelter, but with strong community objections, we agreed it wasn't the right location for the infrastructure," Mayor Fitzpatrick said.
"Following a site inspection, NSWTA confirmed that Lot 1 DP 502253 was a suitable alternative to the original location in Lawrence Park."
Subject to the NSWTA making its own enquiries regarding development approval for the proposed use of the land, Council today approved a tenure of 20 years in the form of four consecutive five-year leases at an annual market rental determined by a registered valuer.
"A preliminary design has been prepared showing a 20-metre monopole and outdoor cabinet designed to minimise structural height and footprint, to improve visual impact for the community," Mayor Fitzpatrick said.
Council officers have been in ongoing discussions with the NSWTA regarding the proposal, and the NSW RFS has been consulted and expressed support.
