Teenager charged after pursuit - Normanhurst

A teenager has been charged with multiple offences after a pursuit in Sydney's north last night.

About 11pm (Wednesday 13 January 2021), officers attached to Ryde Highway Patrol were conducting patrols on the M1 Motorway, near Wahroonga, when they saw a white Audi travelling south on the M1 allegedly at high speed.

Checks revealed the vehicle had been reported stolen and had been involved in a pursuit earlier that evening in the Tuggerah Lakes area.

Police activated their warning lights and sirens directing the driver to stop; however, the driver allegedly accelerated away, and a pursuit was initiated.

Police followed the Audi where it continued south towards Pennant Hills Road. A short time later the vehicle crossed over a median strip and onto Frith Avenue, where it hit a power pole.

Police arrested the driver – a 17-year-old boy – at the scene. Checks revealed the driver did not hold a current driver's licence.

The teenager was subjected to a roadside breath test which produced a negative result. He was taken to Hornsby Hospital for mandatory testing.

On release he was taken to Hornsby Police Station and charged with police pursuit – not stop – drive at speed, never licensed person drive vehicle on road, police pursuit – not stop – drive dangerously, negligent driving (no death or grievous bodily harm), and drive conveyance taken without consent of owner.

He was refused bail and will appear at Surry Hills Children's Court today (Thursday 14 January 2021).
