Telestroke Enhances Care for Remote Stroke Patients

WA's Telestroke service is helping stroke patients across the state receive timely, life-saving care, delivering more than 3,400 consultations since its launch in 2021.

Regional uptake is strong with more than half of all referrals from the South West and Great Southern.

Operating 24/7, Telestroke connects hospitals without onsite stroke specialists to metropolitan stroke specialists who can access brain imaging scans, quickly diagnose the patient, and recommend the best treatment.

Every minute matters for stroke patients – up to 1.9 million brain cells can be lost each minute without treatment.

As we mark National Stroke Week (4 to 10 August) it is a timely reminder to think FAST and know the signs of a stroke:

  • Face: Check their face. Has their mouth drooped?
  • Arms: Can they lift both arms?
  • Speech: Is their speech slurred?
  • Time: Is critical. If you see any of these signs call Triple Zero (000) straight away.
