A $1.03M tender to construct new tennis courts at Beechworth's Baarmutha Park has been awarded to sports facility design and construction experts, iDwala Pty Ltd.

The project will see the construction of four new cushioned acrylic courts, lighting, fencing and all other associated works, including construction of the access road re-alignment and car parking.

The project is being funded by a $250,000 Victorian Government grant, $800,000 from the Beechworth Lawn Tennis Club and $35,000 from Council.

Mayor Jenny O'Connor says the new courts will enhance the amenity of the existing Baarmutha Park sports precinct and create increased participation in tennis by providing a competition grade, compliant facility.

The tennis club was previously based in Albert Street, and is using the funds raised from the sale of the site for the new courts.

Site works are expected to begin this month with a completion date of January 2022.

The northern entry to Baarmutha Park will be closed to traffic for the duration of the works, with access to facilities via the main entry gate opposite Victoria Road.
