The Tasmanian Liberal Government is strengthening teacher recruitment and retention opportunities in regional and remote communities, with the construction tender now released for four new teacher residences in Smithton.
Minister for Education, Jo Palmer, said the Tasmanian Liberal Government is investing $15 million in the Teacher Residences Program, which will see the construction or refurbishment of 37 residences in our rural and remote communities across the state.
"We value our teachers and want them to have access to quality, fit-for-purpose accommodation in our regional and remote communities," Minister Palmer said.
"By providing modern, comfortable housing, we are supporting educators to build long-term careers in our regional schools.
"Our Government is delivering for Tasmania by taking strong action to strengthen teacher recruitment and retention, ensuring students in every community have access to quality education."
Refurbishment of 21 existing teacher residences at Queenstown has recently been completed, with a further 12 new residences to be built at Queenstown, Scottsdale and Flinders Island.
Upgrades are also committed for teacher residences at King Island through a separate funding source.
Construction of the four new teacher residences at Smithton is expected to commence in the first half of this year.
