The tender to build Carnarvon's new 38-bed aged and palliative care facility has been released to market.
In line with the McGowan Government's ongoing commitment to healthcare closer to home, the $16.5 million project is set to see the construction of a contemporary facility with dedicated aged and palliative care beds.
The new facility will reduce the burden of travel and discomfort for some of the district's most vulnerable older people and those requiring end of life care.
Set to be co-located at the newly redeveloped Carnarvon Health Campus, the project will bring together key health services under one roof, creating a modern, purpose-built healthcare hub that supports the integration of primary care.
Design of the contemporary facility includes dedicated rooms with space for visiting family members and kitchenette facilities. There are private courtyard spaces and videoconferencing technology.
The tender process is expected to take five months with construction to begin shortly thereafter.
As stated by Health Minister Roger Cook:
"We are determined to ensure our sickest and most vulnerable Western Australians are cared for comfortably, with dignity and close to home during their final stages of life.
"Our commitment ensures the number of aged care beds in Carnarvon will more than double and forms part of record $224 million investment in palliative care under the McGowan Government.
"Care at a community level eases the burden of travel for those living in rural and regional Western Australia and in this case, means people with any life-limiting or terminal condition can live their lives as fully and comfortably as possible closer to home, their friends, families and loved ones."
