Major capital works on the sporting facilities at Chrisp Street, Rapid Creek have been completed.
These significant works, costing $453k, included re-surfacing three tennis courts, a new multisport court, a picnic area with shade structure, landscaping and car park upgrades.
Along with $211k from City of Darwin, the project was funded through a $230k special purpose grant from the Northern Territory Government and $12k from Tennis Australia.
Lord Mayor Vatskalis, Local Member for Nightcliff Natasha Fyles, Sam Gibson, CEO Tennis NT and Elected Member Peter Pangquee inspected the works today.
"Completion of major works on these sporting facilities means the public now have fantastic recreation facilities they can use year round," said Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis.
Natasha Fyles, MLA Member for Nightcliff said "It's important that Territorians have access high quality sporting infrastructure in their community.
"These tennis court upgrades are fantastic for Rapid Creek and Nightcliff because they'll provide great facilities for everyone from up and coming athletes to local families looking to keep fit."
Sam Gibson, CEO Tennis NT said "Tennis is a sport that people of all ages and abilities can enjoy twelve months a year. Completion of these public tennis courts means tennis as a sport is now even more accessible to anyone who wants to play."
A multisport court was been included in the project, in response to requests from the community to install an open access basketball court in the Nightcliff area.
Enda Murphy, from THE Mining Pty Ltd, the local company who delivered the project, said "We are proud to have been awarded and delivered this contract for City of Darwin, on budget and on time."
"Projects like this sustain our business, support employment and provide opportunities for our staff and a range of local sub-contractors and suppliers."
