Territorians Advised To Brace For Cyclone, Flooding

NT Government

Authorities are urging Territorians to prepare now as the Bureau of Meteorology continues to monitor Tropical Low 34U off the coast of Queensland.

The system is expected to move west towards the Northern Territory over coming days and may bring additional rainfall and severe weather to parts of the Territory.

Recent rainfall has already left ground conditions saturated across many regions, with several river systems experiencing ongoing flooding. Further rainfall associated with the system could worsen flooding and cause renewed river rises, particularly across the Daly, Roper and Katherine catchments.

Deputy Chief Officer NT Emergency Services Adam White said now is the time for households to check their preparations.

"Even though the system is still developing, the most important thing people can do right now is use this time to prepare. Small steps taken early can make a big difference if conditions worsen." he said.

"Cyclones often bring significant rainfall, and with the ground already saturated across parts of the Territory, additional rain could quickly lead to renewed flooding in some catchments."

Territorians are encouraged to:

Check and replenish emergency kits with water, non-perishable food, medications and important documents.Ensure supplies include a battery-powered radio, first aid kit and enough food and water for at least three days.Review household emergency plans, including how family members will communicate and consider your pets and livestock.Talk with children about the plan so they know what to do during an emergency.Secure loose outdoor items and clear gutters around the home.Stay informed by monitoring official warnings and advice.
